COP28, a conference to discuss the challenges of the world's climate, begins on the 30th in Dubai. Amid the intensification of the effects of climate change, pressure is growing for countries to announce concrete actions. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the main global forum for discussing and making decisions on climate issues. COP 28 promises to be a milestone, especially for Brazil, which plays a crucial role in the environmental debate. The country's rich biodiversity and the percentage of native areas still preserved in the country place Brazil at the center of the debates. The country is recognized as a major environmental power, with unique opportunities for the development of an economy based on ecological transition. On the other hand, this leading role also raises demands and pressure for concrete actions to preserve the environment.

COP in Brazil:

In 2025, COP will arrive in Brazil for its 30th edition. With this, Brazil will regain its place as a protagonist in the global debate on sustainability, with the conditions to promote development and innovation through a green agenda.

Brazil's Environmental Commitments:

Brazil has a long history of participating in COPs, playing an active role in international efforts to combat climate change. At COP 28, the country will reaffirm its commitment to the Paris Agreement, which established concrete targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The move is part of a strategy to reposition the country as an active player in the fight against the climate emergency.

At COP27, then-president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced Brazil's return to multilateral efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. At the Economic and Social Forum, Brazil's intentions were reinforced by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Marina Silva.

She later took advantage of Climate Week, a parallel event to the UN General Assembly, to announce the increase in Brazil's emission reduction commitments from 37% to 48% by 2025 and from 50% to 53% by 2030. There is also an expectation that the Brazilian government will also present initiatives to strengthen monitoring and protection of the Amazon, since deforestation and fires in the region are global concerns.

Emerging Challenges:

If, on the one hand, the reduction of 22% in the deforestation rate in the Amazon It is good news, on the other hand, the recent heat wave, the drought in the northern region and the fires in the Pantanal reinforce the environmental challenges in the country.

The carbon market

Another point that is attracting enormous interest is the regulation of the carbon market in the country. With a potential of 15% of global carbon capture, Brazil stands out as one of the main actors in the carbon market. The McKinsey study reinforces the importance of the green transition for the country's development.

However, the country still faces investment and regulatory challenges to develop this potential.

The Amazon plays a vital role in regulating the climate and Brazil’s commitment to the region is fundamental. Furthermore, Brazil’s resumption of environmental diplomacy can influence nations and inspire partnerships to address global environmental challenges.
