What is the greenhouse effect?

Efeito Estufa

Generally, when we hear the term Greenhouse Effect, we have a negative reaction, as we associate it with global warming, climate change and natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, droughts and earthquakes.

What we need to understand is that the Greenhouse Effect is a natural phenomenon and fundamental to life on our planet.

The Greenhouse Effect is like a blanket that prevents the solar energy absorbed by the planet during the day from being completely dissipated, causing sudden drops in temperature. It acts as a natural regulator of the average temperature on the Earth's surface, keeping it at around 15ºC.

This mantle is composed of various greenhouse gases (GHG), such as CO2 (carbon dioxide), CH4 (methane) and N2O (nitrous oxide), and also water vapor (H2O), all of which are naturally found in the atmosphere.

The continuous increase in sources generating greenhouse gases (GHG), without proper absorption by the planet, through natural sinks, causes an imbalance, allowing greater quantities of gases to circulate through the atmosphere, increasing the temperature and, consequently, resulting in global warming, climate change and natural disasters.
